Metamora Aqueduct Covered Bridge Rehabilitation

Jim and Daniel were the Engineers of Record on this bridge rehabilitation. The Metamora aqueduct is the only covered bridge aqueduct functioning in the United States which still carries waterway traffic, albeit, only for tourists. Over years of use, sediment had built up on the bridge on the canal and was so much weight, that the timer arches pushed out the stone abutments, allowing the lower chord to fail. The bridge also had numerous leaks throughout its length so the goal needed to be to repair the trusses and address the leaking issues. Using several innovative approaches, the truss was repaired and reinforced, and the bridge’s leaking was addressed. Once completed, it was the first time in living memory that the underside of the bridge was dry.
